Suicide rate linked to custody issues, Parental Grief Syndrome

Robert Palumbo Ph. D is a family psychologist. In his letter to the United States Attorney General, John Ashcroft, about Parental Grief Syndrome he points out how the family court system is constantly failing parents - usually fathers - who have become severely distraught and potentially dangerous [to themselves or to others] because they have been improperly separated from their children. There is overwhelming evidence of a strong inborn need for parents, both men and women, to fight for their children, writes Robert Palumbo. He finds that this is "creating environments conducive to domestic violence, suicides and what may very well even become homicides in the near future."

The frustrated situation that Robert Palumbo describes in his letter to the US Attorney General is similar to that which is experienced by parents in child care cases where the children are taken into public care. Many parents become mentally ill, alcoholics, drug-addicts or commit arson, suicide and even homicide. We find similar destructive tendencies in the children who have been improperly separated from their parents. Besides, they may develop Parental alienation syndrome.

The NCHR finds it therefore very important to present this letter to our readers.
