A family was 'overjoyed' today after winning the right to adopt a little girl after a lengthy legal battle amid claims the father once smacked another child for swearing.

An East London council's decision to ban the couple from adopting the half-sister of a boy they had raised for five years had been described as 'bizarre' and was overturned by a High Court judge.

But despite the ruling Newham Council in East London still refused to reunite the baby - who is known as  K -  with her half-brother.

Smacking row pair can now adopt
A couple have won the right to adopt a two-year-old girl after a council blocked the move when the husband admitted smacking a child.

The couple, known as Mr and Mrs T, applied to adopt a girl whose brother they have already adopted.

But Newham Council in east London council initially said they were unsuitable because of their attitude to corporal punishment.

It overturned its decision ahead of a second High Court review.

The original decision to ban the couple from adopting the half-sister of a boy they have raised for five years was described as bizarre and overturned by a judge last week.

A couple prevented from adopting a baby girl because they once slapped another child for swearing won a court's backing today when a judge branded the ban 'bizarre'.

The 'caring and sensitive' couple had been told by a council they could not take in the half-sister of a little boy they adopted five years ago.

Social workers cited the adoptive father's 'attitude to corporal punishment' after he revealed in adoption interviews he had once smacked the boy, now seven, for swearing.
